Thoughts on Preparation, Experience and Integration.

Updated: Dec 29, 2024

Every change we go through follows the pattern of preparation, experience, and integration. At Holos Breathwork, we structure all of our services around this pattern.

Preparation - I want to step into the new or unknown

As with every thing in life, this is active on all the levels of our being; conscious, unconscious, transpersonal, etc. The conscious part may be deciding to go to France and planning all the details of transportation. lodging and activities. The unconscious part may be feeling anxiety over flying, concern that your travelling companions might not get along, a feeling fuelled by movies and books that this trip will fundamentally change you.

You might have swings in emotion or energy, surges of anticipation and excitement, doubts about the decision or some of the details, anxiety etc.

Experience - hmmm, I never saw, smelt, heard, thought, felt that before

You experience something that is new and outside of everything that you understand of the universe. Again, this can be anywhere on any of the levels of your being. It is profoundly new.

This can be as simple as an exquisite meal, the beauty of Paris at night, the sense of deep human history in Europe.

It can be as deep as meeting the divine while visiting a sacred site.

Integration - what do I do with that?

We all have a way of organizing and managing our understanding of the universe and everything we have experienced. It is the way we operate on a practical level, and the way we aspire to grow. In all the vastness of the universe, we have a known sphere that we move in. When we experience something outside of the sphere we have the choice of how we deal with it.

We can deny its reality. This leads to a closing down of our conscious mind, and tension between our conscious mind and our depths. The depths know it happened. Closing it down is like trying to hold back the tide, eventually it will break through.

We can accept it and start to integrate the new understanding. This leads to the sphere of the universe that we understand expanding. It also means that some of the understanding we had (things already in our sphere) need to change to be consistent with our new knowledge. This can mean patterns of behaviour or relationships need to shift and realign.

This can be intense and last for sometime. It is an amazing opportunity to heal and to evolve.

Spiral - Integration is the beginning of preparation

As you integrate the experience and your reality evolves, new questions and ideas naturally arise. At some point the integration is complete enough that you find yourself moving into preparation. You feel the pull to step into the new or unknown again.

The metaphor is the spiral, not the circle because the “you” that wants to take that next step is different from the “you “ that took the last step. The spiral is also more apt because time is passing and the universe is moving. You can’t step in the same river twice.
